If you take a closer look at the lamp posts, you’ll notice that what appears to be the Chanel logo alternates with the letter ‘W’.
In fact, the famous designer Coco Chanel had a romantic relationship with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster.
They first met in 1923, and their relationship continued for around ten years. The Duke—often described as one of the wealthiest men in Europe at the time—was also a significant patron of Chanel during this period.
However, Chanel refused his proposal. It’s famously said that she remarked: “There are many Duchesses of Westminster, but there is only one Coco Chanel.”
Interestingly, these lamp posts were designed long after the two had parted ways. The ‘W’ stands for the Westminster area, while the two ‘C’s—resembling the Chanel logo—are said to represent ‘City Council’. Although Westminster City Council does not officially acknowledge this interpretation, it’s tempting to believe there’s a romantic story behind it—that the Duke may have still held a torch for Chanel.
London is full of little discoveries like this. As Blue Badge guides, we love sharing these moments of surprise and insight with our guests. Do keep an eye out for these lamp posts when you’re exploring the city!
